Week of Lochte – Star of FINA Championships in Istanbul

Speedo sponsored Ryan Lochte proved to be the undoubted star of the 11th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) which took place in Istanbul Turkey last week. The American secured an unprecedented eight medals during the five days of competition – six of them Gold – to seize the FINA Award for Best Male Swimmer.

Lochte, who swam throughout the Championships wearing the Speedo LZR Racer Elite jammer and Fastskin3 Elite goggles, also set two new world records in the 100m and 200m Individual Medley events to cap off a magnificent week of achievement for the 28-year-old.

Lochte was the driving force behind the American team which topped the medal table, with several other Gold medallists opting to wear Speedo swimwear to help propel them to their triumphs.

Among them were Allison Schmitt and Olivia Smoliga, who each return to the USA with two Gold medals apiece, while Speedo sponsored Jessica Hardy was part of the winning USA 4x100m Freestyle team, helping her to seal the sixth World Title success of her career.

Behind the USA on the leaderboard were the Speedo sponsored China team, with Ye Shiwen and Zhao Jing each setting new Championships Records in the 200m Individual Medley and 50m Backstroke respectively.

Other Champions included Lauren Boyle, with the New Zealander wearing Speedo in her 800m Freestyle victory, while Speedo sponsored Mie Nielsen from Denmark taking Gold in the women’s 4x200m Medley.

As well as outfitting the leading swim stars of the Championships, Speedo’s presence and influence was evident at the Sinan Erdem Dome, as the brand once again was the official partner to the Championships, as part of its ongoing relationship with aquatics sport’s world governing body, FINA (Federation Internationale de Natation).

The partnership saw the Speedo brand prominently displayed at poolside, in the media mix zone and on all printed materials at the Championships, with Speedo also providing uniforms for officials, staff and volunteers in Istanbul.

With the championships in Istanbul having wrapped up a memorable year for swimming in 2012, attention now turns to the 15th FINA World Championships in Barcelona, which will also see Speedo as an official partner.
