As an 18 month old, I cried during every swim lesson. I was so scared of my swim lessons, in fact, that I even cried whenever my swim instructor’s name was mentioned. But I lived in California and we had a backyard pool, so learning to swim was not a choice for me, it was a life skill necessary for my safety. I am so honored to become Special Olympics’ newest Global Ambassador! Yesterday we announced that the Michael Phelps Foundation’s IM program is expanding to seven countries in partnership with Special Olympics International. I have had the pleasure of working with Special Olympics athletes over the last few years and believe that together we can help grow the sport of swimming while also encouraging active and healthy lifestyles for people of all ages and abilities.
